6:19 pm
his facebook page by posting it. is that enough to get the fbi involved? or would there have to be more? >> no, this is sufficient. and if we look at for example as you mention nadal hasan, there was enough obviously at that point to dig and like we saw when jim said when they do a search we were able to learn quickly that hasan was actually in contact with an war al wa la ki. one of the top three leaders of al qaeda. in this case what it does highlight is what jim said earlier, at a time when i know there were a lot of frustrations over the nsa program, but you don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water, this is a moment i can assure you when a tool like the nsa metadata program would have an ability to quickly identify who this individual has called in the last three months. that's a critical way to find out the network. and the boston bombing case,

they usually have an enabler somewhere in the community. >> jim, this guy goes in there with a knife that they found -- he found in the workplace. the police described it as a regular sized knife. they said something you would cut a head of lettuce with. he was shot down by a deputy sheriff on site. who knows how bad this would have been -- >> thank god someone in that place had a gun. a good american citizen had a gun. and i think we're going to find in the future that more and more people that are just whimsically against guns or say all these things are going to hope real good people have guns too. imagine if he didn't have a gun how many more bodies we'd be seeing here. >> right. last question, chad, how on earth could a man like this with such a lengthy history get hired in the first place? any thoughts on that? >> that highlights the issue that just generally in a world where we have the tools that can allow us to do these kind of background checks, we have to
6:21 pm
begin to allow both employers and law enforcement to use those tools within the checks and balances of civil liberties. the last thing i would tell you too in closing, megyn, is in a moment like this when i was at homeland security there's no question we should be outraged and if in fact this ends up being a terrorist act we should call it what it is. but at the same time we need to be very careful and make sure that there isn't blowback against our fellow muslim-americans who are law-abiding, peace loving, and this is a moment to be clear where we absolutely need their help to defeat this long war which is the war of ideas. >> it's going to take everyone. >> that's right. >> it's going to take everyone who is not a savage to stand up against this savagery. i got to go. gentlemen, thank you both. >> thank you, megyn. >> long before this attack the suspect had a number of run-ins with police and one turned very violent. we will hear directly from the officer he attacked next. plus, how did alton nolen become jah' keem e/6lvyisreal.

breaking tonight, we have been telling you about a chilling attack in moore, oklahoma, involving a man who beheaded a former co-worker and stabbed another woman. this was not his first violent attack. back in 2010 he actually injured a police officer. she says she will never forget this man. and was horrified to learn about events in moore today. listen. >> one minute we're talking and the next he's assaulting me. i had one handcuff on his right wrist and he hit me in the chest, pushed me back and then yanked the handcuff out of my hand. but one minute we're talking and the next he's assaulting me.

went on a rampage after he was fired from his workplace and was reportedly shouting arabic phrases during the attack. whether he was or wasn't, if you look at his facebook page it is littered with anti-american propaganda and pro-osama bin laden, pro-radical islam propaganda. tonight cair has spoken out saying, "islam stands for peace. what this gentleman did in moore, which is inhumane and barbaric, is definitely not a representation of what our faith teaches. and we hope and pray that justice will be brought against the perpetrator soon so that the victims and their families can find some sort of solace in that justice." we also heard from a leader of a mosque in moore, oklahoma. >> my inner feelings would nobody with the right mind would do such a heinous crime. did not recognize the perpetrator. and i was sad and heartbroken for the victims.

6:36 pm
what their background is, whether they were buddhist and converted, whether they were christians and converted, whether they were jews and converted, they all end up doing the exact same thing. >> let me ask you -- i don't understand, mike, why you can't just say that, yes, of course there is this faction of islam that has radicalized. and i believe that they have completely misunderstood my religion. because the vast majority of muslims on this earth are peace loving, kind, gentle souls. but there is this faction. and they interpret the quran i love and know in a way i don't agree with. but how can you say that it's not islamic? >> well, megyn, you want me to respond to the allegation bridget made? sfwl i'd like you to answer my question. you can respond to bridget as well. >> i don't want to get into a different -- >> well, my question is -- just answer that question.

it's interesting because it comes at a time when the white house is playing a little defense about a president who ran for office against the bush war on terror now seeming to be following at least some of it in iraq and syria. so to show some separation today at the white house briefing, josh earnest insisted, look, this president does much smaller wars, not ground wars like we saw in the bush administration, smaller counterterror measures that in fact in places like yemen and somalia that josh earnest said have turned out to be a success in yemen even though right now the security situation has completely deteriorated in yemen. so i pressed josh on that. listen. >> how can you say a success yemen when the country's falling apart? >> because, ed, what we have seen is we have seen the effective deployment of a counterterrorism strategy that involves building up the capacity of local forces, on occasion backed by american military forces to counter extremist threats emanating from

6:46 pm
the last 20 years, which gives the iranians a front row seat on a waterway separating the red sea -- >> so if this goes -- and sheez shia take over, that's basically iran taking over in yemen? >> in a way it mirrors exactly the situation we have with syria in which we have one very nasty shiite affiliated group backed by iran, anti-american and one very nasty sunni affiliated group. so the suggestion that yemen is somehow an example of what america can do is actually the opposite of the truth. yemen is proof of the failure of a light footprint strategy of the belief that we can do cheaply what ultimately needs to be done expensively, which is take out both our enemies, on the shiite and sunni side. >> and there it is. because we have seen over the past six months at least this domino effect of what appears to be the president's foreign
